New Reuse Shop at Roseheyworth Recycling Centre Abertillery
Residents asked to donate to “The Den” rather than dump reusable items in the skips.
Blaenau Gwent Council and South Wales social enterprise Wastesavers Charitable Trust officially opened their latest reuse store - The Den on Friday 5th November 2021.
The store gives residents a chance to donate unwanted household items to the on-site charity shop rather than dump them in recycling skips.
All items donated are checked for safety and then made available to customers at “bargain prices”.
Councillor Joanna Wilkins, Executive Member for the Environment says:
“I am delighted that this shop has opened its doors in Blaenau Gwent. This now gives people the chance to recycle their unwanted items that may otherwise have been thrown away. Additionally, it gives back to the community by supporting those who may need it.
“We have already had a good response through donations and items that have been saved from disposal by attendants and volunteers at the Recycle Centre. I am sure this official opening will help further raise the profile of our Reuse Shop - The Den.”
Last month The Den saved more than 2,000 items weighing almost 5 tonnes from going in the skips.
Tom Belcher, Wastesavers Regional Manager said:
“We’ve had an amazing response from people since opening. Customers constantly tell us it’s criminal what people throw away.
“If you’ve ever visited the recycling centre and thought that someone might have a use for these things I’m dumping, you can now donate them to the on-site charity shop.
“Residents also love the idea that their unwanted items have a chance of finding a new home rather than ending up in a skip.
“By setting up this shop we have created three new jobs and will be saving tons of items from being dumped. Everybody wins.”

Open six days a week from 09.30 to 16.30 (closed Tuesdays).
