Special Recognition Certificate for MND fundraising schoolboy

Blaenau Gwent Council has presented a Special Recognition Certificate to Abertillery schoolboy, Archie Williams, for his fundraising and awareness work for Motor Neurone Disease following his dad’s diagnosis.

Archie Williams, aged 11, has been a key part of the charity set up by the Williams family, MND Defiance, following dad Mark’s diagnosis in July 2022. As well as this, Archie has been involved with the day-to-day care for his dad, supporting mum Steph.

Our Presiding Member Councillor Chris Smith visited his school assembly to present the certificate, together with a voucher for a local sports store for the rugby mad youngster.

Archie was applauded his fellow pupils, teachers, and little sister Niamh.

Mum Steph said: ”Life following Mrk’s diagnosis has been a complete rollercoaster, with plenty of downs, but as a family we have chosen to take the fight to MND on and do all we can to raise awareness of this awful disease and support other families going through the same trauma. Archie has been a massive part of our journey, always wanting to do what he can to help his dad and also the wider MND cause, taking on fundraising challenges here there and everywhere – we’re so proud of him.

Councillor Chris Smith said on presenting the award: “This young man is a true inspiration to us all, and I’m absolutely delighted to play a part in recognising that. Well done Archie from us all at Blaenau Gwent Council.”
