Children of service families from across Blaenau Gwent came together at Willowtown Community Primary School for a special event to celebrate the Month of the Military Child, recognising the resilience and experiences of children from service families.

Willowtown Primary recently achieved Bronze Status in Supporting Service Children in Education Cymru’s Little Troopers initiative, which recognises schools that actively support service children.
The event brought together 30 children from 10 schools, alongside representatives from Supporting Service Children in Education (SSCE) Cymru and the Royal British Legion, and Blaenau Gwent Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, Cllr Sue Edmunds.
Willowtown mum, Carys Jones said:
“Little Troopers has provided our son with the invaluable opportunity to make new friends and gain an understanding of the diverse needs of service families. It is reassuring to know that there is a dedicated service that actively considers and supports the unique requirements of service member families.
“As parents, Willowtown has granted us the opportunity to engage in various events, and they have been exceptional in facilitating the implementation of Little Troopers. For this, we are truly grateful.”
Councillor Sue Edmunds said:
“The wellbeing of children and young people is a priority for us. Military children often face unique challenges, from frequent moves to time spent apart from loved ones. I was delighted to attend this event, which brought our schools and communities together to celebrate their resilience and to reaffirm our shared commitment to supporting them and their families.
“As a Council, we are committed to supporting current and past members of our armed forces though our Armed Forces Community Covenant.”
Headteacher Mel Evans said:
“Our Bronze Status highlights the school’s ongoing commitment to understanding the needs of service children and creating a supportive, inclusive environment, ensuring no child feels isolated because of their family’s service. We were delighted to bring together children from different areas but with the same experiences for this special event – it was a truly special day which we hope to make an annual event.”
Cara Lloyd Roberts, SSCE Cymru School Liaison Officer said:
“Congratulations to Willowtown Primary School in Blaenau Gwent on achieving your Bronze Armed Forces Friendly Schools Cymru status. This recognition highlights your dedication to identifying and supporting your Service children, deepening understanding of their unique experiences, and actively engaging with the Armed Forces community.
“Thank you also for hosting your recent Month of the Military Child event, bringing Service children from across Blaenau Gwent together, an inspiring example of your commitment to building connection, awareness, and support. A truly well-deserved achievement, well done to everyone involved.
“It’s been a pleasure working with you and we look forward to continuing that work with yourselves and the schools of Blaenau Gwent.”
The day began with a Little Troopers presentation, followed by an army artefact display provided by a serving parent, who was on hand to explain and share stories behind the items. Children then enjoyed a brunch before taking part in an interactive storytelling session with Louby Lou.
Pupils also took part in a team‑building and fitness session delivered by Aneurin Leisure and an art activity to create a visual display marking the Month of the Military Child.
The event concluded with the presentation of Little Troopers pin badges, recognising the children’s participation and resilience.
Funding for the day was provided by the Royal British Legion and Supporting Service Children in Education in Wales, enabling a programme of creative, interactive and team‑building activities designed around connection, understanding and fun.
