A long‑established Blaenau Gwent manufacturer with more than 40 years’ experience supplying high‑quality handling equipment to major global brands has strengthened its digital infrastructure to support continued growth, thanks to support from the Blaenau Gwent Business Development Grant.
Established in 1986 and based in Abertillery, Base Handling Products Ltd specialises in the design and manufacture of handling equipment for the food and pharmaceutical processing industries. Over the years, the business has also supplied equipment to a wide range of additional sectors, including general manufacturing.
The company works with a portfolio of leading multinational brands, including Nestlé, Unilever, Norgine, GlaxoSmithKline and Heinz. Its reputation extends well beyond the UK, with equipment exported to Germany, the USA, Australia, China, Chile and Ireland, and an order currently being finalised for South Africa.
Support from the Business Development Grant has enabled the company to invest in a new file server and upgraded computer systems, allowing for a full enhancement of its digital software infrastructure. These improvements are helping to streamline internal processes, strengthen system reliability, and ensure the business continues to meet the demanding quality and compliance standards required by its global customer base.
Company Director, Ernie Pitt said: “We have operated in Blaenau Gwent for more than 40 years and have consistently found the Council to be supportive, particularly as we invest in modernising our systems to meet the demands of global customers.”
Councillor John Morgan, Cabinet Member for Economy and Place, commented: “It’s excellent to see long‑established local manufacturers continuing to invest, modernise and adapt. Support through the Business Development Grant is helping businesses like this strengthen their digital capabilities and remain competitive in sophisticated global markets.”
The Blaenau Gwent Business Development Grant was funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and managed by the Business & Innovation Team at Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. The scheme is currently closed.
