As part of the Welsh Government's expansion of the Flying Start programme across Wales, all children aged two on or before 31 August 2026 in Blaenau Gwent will be entitled to 12 and a half hours of fully funded childcare from September 2026.
Cllr Sue Edmunds, Blaenau Gwent's Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said:
"Making childcare more affordable is excellent news for all families and I'm pleased we've been able to drive forward this expanded offer so quickly in Blaenau Gwent.
"Childcare support for families is one of the key levers we have to address health inequalities and improve educational outcomes so access to high-quality early years education and care will help give our children the best start in life and give practical support to parents during the important first few years of family life.”
Children can access a part-time childcare place from the term following their second birthday until they become eligible for a nursery place in the term following their third birthday and can choose either a Welsh-medium or English-medium childcare setting.
Blaenau Gwent Council’s Childcare and Play Manager, Claire Smith, said:
"Blaenau Gwent are ready to roll out Welsh Government funded Flying Start childcare from September with children receiving two and a half hours of funded childcare per day, up to 5 days per week for 39 weeks of the year with a registered Flying Start childcare setting or childminder within the borough.
"To apply, parents must complete an application form before the 31st of August, with their first, second and third choice of childcare provider. Parents will be receiving letters with details of how to apply for a childcare place from 10th August 2026. Over 100 eligible families should receive letters soon.
"While we will do our best to meet preferences, some providers have limited places, and we cannot guarantee your first choice. Spaces will be confirmed from the week commencing 14th September."
