Welcome to the PODs at Augusta House Ebbw Vale —a forward-thinking initiative by Blaenau Gwent Social Services designed to support individuals with learning disabilities and complex needs on their journey to independent living.
Funded by the Welsh Government Regional Integration Fund (RIF) capital funding via the Gwent Regional Partnership Board, the PODs are self-contained spaces tailored to help people aged 16 and over develop essential life skills and self-confidence. These innovative facilities combine practical amenities with compassionate support to create a truly transformative experience.
What Are the PODs?
The PODs are beautifully designed, purpose-built units located next to Augusta House—a Residential respite facility for children and adults with a learning disability. They provide a safe, calm, and empowering environment where individuals can build confidence in everyday life skills such as cooking, cleaning, and managing personal care.
Each POD includes:
- An integrated kitchen with accessible appliances
- Fully adaptable bathroom
- Single bedroom with adjustable bed
- Comfortable lounge and dining area
- Ramp access and smart technology for enhanced independence
This setup gives individuals the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that feels like home—whilst being supported by trained professionals which could include an Occupational Therapist, Support Worker or a Direct Payment Personal Assistant.
A Strengths-Based Approach
At the heart of the PODs is a simple, powerful principle: focus on what people can do. Every individual receives personalised support based on their own strengths and goals. Whether it’s practicing household tasks, building social skills, or staying overnight independently for the first time, the PODs nurture meaningful progress every step of the way.
Extending Access Beyond Blaenau Gwent
While the PODs are based in Blaenau Gwent, individuals living outside the Local Authority can access them through agreement and assessment by a relevant professional—such as a Social Worker. We welcome discussions with other Local Authorities to explore how the PODs can be commissioned to support their own assessments and promote independent living skills development.
