St Illtyd’s Primary School in Llanhilleth, Blaenau Gwent, is celebrating a positive inspection report from Estyn, which has praised the school for its ‘friendly, inviting, and inclusive’ environment.
Amongst the many highlights, the report noted:
- Significant improvements made by the leadership team that has resulted in rapid progress
- A strong culture of professional learning and coaching
- Pupil well-being is central to everyday life, creating a warm, nurturing environment in which children thrive
- Exceptional relationships between staff and pupils, and a calm, supportive atmosphere supports pupils to feel safe, secure and ready to learn
- Pupils engage enthusiastically in lessons and benefit from an attractive, well-resourced learning environment.
The school’s thoughtfully designed outdoor areas and purposeful learning spaces were also praised, helping pupils to develop responsibility, independence and confidence in their daily activities.
Inspectors also recognised the strong progress made by many pupils, including those from low-income households and those with additional learning needs (ALN). The school’s ‘effective and insightful’ approach to supporting pupils with ALN was identified as a particular strength, with tailored support ensuring individual needs are met.
Headteacher Kelly Forrest said:
“This report is a wonderful recognition of what can be achieved when a school community works together. We are incredibly proud of our pupils and grateful to our dedicated staff, governors, families and wider community and agencies for the support, trust and collaboration that have contributed to this success. Estyn recognised the warm, inclusive environment that exists within our school and the significant progress that has been made for our learners.

Recommendations included further developing pupils' Welsh language skills and continuing to promote regular attendance for pupils from low-income backgrounds.
