Dads Creative Group Continues to Grow in Blaenau Gwent

Fathers across Blaenau Gwent are benefiting from a growing community group that is helping dads build friendships, improve their wellbeing and support one another through creativity and shared experiences.

The Dads Creative Group, supported by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council's Dads Support Service, provides a welcoming space where dads can come together, reduce social isolation and enjoy peer support while taking part in creative activities.

The group has grown from the wider work of the Dads Support Service and the successful creative wellbeing project delivered in partnership with Inside Out Cymru. Through music, creativity and conversation, fathers have been able to develop confidence, improve their mental wellbeing and build lasting friendships.

Alex Lupo, Music Therapist, has played a key role in supporting the group, helping fathers explore their musical creativity in a relaxed and encouraging environment while promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. The Council's Dads Support Worker project has also been instrumental in supporting fathers both one-to-one and through group activities, ensuring services are shaped around what matters most to dads and their families.

The next stage of the group's journey will see members taking greater ownership of its future. Several dads are now progressing through volunteer training and checks, with the aim of helping to lead and shape the group themselves. This reflects Blaenau Gwent's Deal commitment to working alongside local communities, recognising the skills and strengths of residents and supporting them to make a positive difference for others.

Councillor Sue Edmunds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Families, said:

"The Dads Creative Group has created a supportive environment where fathers can connect, build confidence and improve their wellbeing. It's fantastic to see dads now stepping forward to help lead the group and shape its future. Their commitment shows the positive impact that peer support and community connections can have on families across Blaenau Gwent."

A recent celebration event, generously hosted by Love Church Wales, brought together dads, their children and families to celebrate the group's achievements. One of the highlights of the event was the dads performing an original song they had written together, showcasing the confidence, creativity and friendships that have developed through the group.

The Council would also like to thank Cwm RTB's Club, which hosts the weekly sessions and continues to provide a valued community space for fathers across Blaenau Gwent.

The Dads Creative Group meets every Thursday at Cwm RTB's Club and welcomes all dads, grandads and stepdads from across the county borough. Whether looking to meet new people, try something creative or simply spend time with others who understand the challenges of fatherhood, everyone is welcome.
