BWHEG Guided Walks Programme

We're offering yet another Autumn programme of FREE guided walks exploring and enjoying the Blaenavon Heritage Landscape

The walks range in distance from 5 to 10 km (3 - 6 miles). They will be best for reasonably fit adults or older children, but we will try to accommodate people with mobility problems whenever possible.

The walks will start at 10.00 a.m. on the last Sunday of each month. Most will start from the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre, but some will start from other suitable locations, so keep a sharp eye open.

Please wear appropriate footwear and be prepared in case of wet weather.

If you'd like to be involved in leading or helping with our guided walks programme, why not join BWHEG and become part of the team?

1. 28th September 2025

Starting from the World Heritage Centre at 10.00 a.m.

"Carreg y Maen Taro"

A walk of about 9 km (6 miles), suitable for older children, but not recommended for people with limited mobility. This walk passes Garn Lakes to The Whistle Inn and then follows a hillside track to Carreg y Maen Taro. According to Coflein, this is an ancient standing stone erected in “early British” times to commemorate a battle fought here between two kings or chiefs, one of whom was named Ifor. It subsequently marked the boundary between Monmouthshire and Brecknockshire. Depending on the weather, we will either walk along the ridge or follow Pwll Du lane to Pen Ffordd Goch and thence back down to the World Heritage Centre.

There are a couple of steep ascents (and descents), and some parts can be quite muddy in wet weather, but on the whole it’s walkable with appropriate footwear etc.

2. 26th October 2025

Starting at 10.00 a.m. from the Clydach Ironworks Car Park (SO231134)

"Cwm Pwcca"

This walk of about 9 km (6 miles) takes us along the Clydach Gorge, supposedly the haunt of fairies and reputedly (but no proof) once visited by Shakespeare.

We’ll visit the old Clydach Ironworks before following the valley of the Clydach River, with its spectacular group of waterfalls. We’ll then walk up the gorge, crossing the HoV road towards the Cwm Nantmelyn waterfall. We’ll return via Cheltenham Village, mourning en route the loss of the Drum and Monkey pub (if only for its name!). We’ll recross the road via the posh new footbridge, to return to our cars.

There are a couple of steep ascents (and descents), and some parts can be quite muddy in wet weather, but on the whole it’s walkable with appropriate footwear etc.

3. 30th November 2025

Last Walk of the Season

Starting from the World Heritage Centre at 10.00 a.m.

"It’s A Long Way to the Whistle"

CINTEL SNOW v2:Users:macuser:Desktop:On the Level.jpg

A walk of about 7.5 km (4½ miles), suitable for older children, but not recommended for people with limited mobility. This walk passes old coal and iron workings en route to The Whistle Inn, where a seasonal celebratory pint may be in order. We then descend the Garn Lakes path back to the World Heritage Centre.

There are a couple of steep ascents (and descents), and some parts can be quite muddy in wet weather, but on the whole it’s walkable with appropriate footwear etc.

Croesi Bysedd, the BWHEG Walks Programme will begin again in March 2026 – Keep your eyes peeled for details!
