Road Safety - Competitions

Senior winner 2
Anti Drink-Driving - Poster Competition

Another resounding success for many young people from Gwent, as those who won awards for their Road Safety Posters came to claim their prizes at County Hall, Cwmbran.  There were 944 posters entered in the competition from 27 schools, all to a high standard.

Many important people attended the presentation evening, including the Chairman of Monmouthshire County Council, the Mayor of Caerphilly and the Mayor of Torfaen.  Gwent's Police Chief Constable, Mick Giannasi, presented the prizes to the pupils.

The Senior winner was Brooke Owen of Glyncoed Comprehensive School, with a timely reminder for drivers during the festive season "Keep the drink in the bottle and your foot off the throttle."

The Junior winner was Lauren Burch of Ystruth Primary School with her witty drawing of knobbly knees - which she assures us were not modelled on her dad.  The slogan "If you are wobbly at the knees, don't pick up the keys."

The winners in each category received a cheque for £100, the runners up won £50, and the schools that the winners attended also won £50.

Mr. Giannasi said that he was impressed with the quality of all the posters and pleased to see that this important message was being taken seriously by so many young people.  He hoped that the powerful messages would persuade drivers that drinking and driving over the festive season, or indeed at any time of year, will simply not be tolerated.
