The Megadive pre-drive education programme took place once again this year at Tredegar RFC for students at Coleg Gwent, Ebbw Vale. Funded by Blaenau Gwent Couny Borough Council's Road Safety Grant from Welsh Assembly Government, it was first run in 1995 and is the recipient of the Prince Michael Award for Road Safety.
Evaluation on several levels has shown that Megadrive is a very effective method of developing a positive attitude to the responsibility of driving a car.
Megadrive consists of an interative introduction attended by all students followed by up to nine workstations that include the following topics:- alcohol; drugs and driving; crash causation and risk; immediate first aid; buying a used car; cockpit-drill and practical driving with an Approved Driving Instructor in a dual controlled car.
Students visit workstations in groups of three, except the practical driving where it is one-to-one. After 15 minutes they move on to the next workstation and so on until they have visited all nine.
At the end of the session, all students will complete an interative evaluation. All workstations are designed and staffed by experts in their field., eg., Road Safety and Fire & Rescue Officers, The Red Cross, Trading Standards, Institute of Advanced Motorists, Driving Standard Agency, Fusion, and Drugaid.
