Prevent Violent Extremism

The Prevent strategy is part of the UK Counter-Terrorism Strategy known as CONTEST.  The Council works in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations through the Gwent CONTEST Board.  The board oversees the local implementation of CONTEST.

The CONTEST strategy has four key elements:

  • Pursue – to stop terrorist attacks
  • Prevent – to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting violent extremism
  • Protect – to strengthen our protection against terrorist attack
  • Prepare – where an attack cannot be stopped, to mitigate its impact

As the UK faces a continuing threat from both international terrorism and domestic extremism, no one is better placed than members of the public to notice concerning activity and behaviours within their own community.

It may be nothing, but if you see it or suspect it - report it by phoning Gwent Police on 101 or 01633 838111 or in the case of emergency by dialling 999.
