Register a Birth

Here you can find information on who, how and where you can register a birth, and what information you will need to bring with you to your appointment.

By Law, you must register a birth within 42 days

If your baby was born in Blaenau Gwent, please call 01495 353374 to book an appointment to register the birth.

You can also attend the Register Office in Blaenau Gwent if your baby was born elsewhere and give a Declaration of Birth. The Registrar will then forward the details on your behalf to the district where the baby was born. Please note there will be a delay in receiving Birth Certificates.

Who Can Register a birth?

Either the baby’s mother or father If the parents are married to each other.

If the parents are not married to each other

  • The mother,
  • The mother and father together

Please note that if the parents are not married to each other at the time of the birth we can only enter the father’s details on the birth certificate if he comes with the mother to register the birth.

Documentation you will need to bring with you when registering a birth

You should bring at least 1 form of identification with you when you go to the Register Office. You can bring:

  • Passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Deed poll
  • Driving license
  • Proof of address (utility bill)
  • Council Tax bill
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate

Does it cost to register a birth?

There is no charge for the registration. You will receive a free short birth certificate showing baby’s forenames, surname, gender and date of birth.

For a fee of £11 you can get a copy of the full birth certificate which also includes the parent’s details.
