Top class new facility at Abertillery Comprehensive welcomed

21 February 2012

A new extension at Abertillery Comprehensive School has been opened by Alun Davies AM, in the presence of Nick Smith MP and the Deputy Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council.

The two-storey refurbished extension – opened on Friday 10 February - provides six new classrooms serving as a new teaching block for Year 7 pupils, and was funded by the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme.

Labour AM for Blaenau Gwent, Alun Davies said: “We all want the very best for our children and young people so it’s great to see how the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme is investing in our schools in Blaenau Gwent.

“Securing capital investment in these difficult economic times is essential for better education outcomes in Blaenau Gwent. I’m sure this new development will help underpin the enormous role that learning has to play in the Heads of the Valleys regeneration strategy.”

The dignitaries learned first-hand from pupils about the benefits the new teaching block has created for their learning – particularly since it has allowed the school to introduce an innovative international curriculum and theme-based teaching style.

Coun. John Mason, Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council, added: “Education is a top priority in Blaenau Gwent, and we welcome the Welsh Government’s support for our work to improve educational outcomes. This represents a significant investment in giving our children the best possible opportunities, and in building a more vibrant future for local communities.”

This is the second phase of work through the 21st Century Schools Programme to be completed at the school.
