Housing Policy and Strategy
Blaenau Gwent Council transferred the ownership and management of its housing stock to Tai Calon Community Housing Limited in July 2010. This means that the council is no longer a social landlord and it does not own any council houses, flats or sheltered housing complexes.
All social housing is now provided by Registered Social Landlords. There are currently four main Registered Social Landlords in Blaenau Gwent, these are Tai Calon Community Housing Limited, Melin Homes Limited, Linc Cymru Housing Association and United Welsh Housing Association.
The council still has a duty to maintain a strategic housing function. The Housing Strategy Team has now been placed within Community Regeneration to deliver the vision for housing in the borough.
The objectives of the Housing Strategy Team are:
- To maximise the provision of affordable housing in the borough
- Work in partnership with RSLs and other strategic partners to maximise opportunities for regeneration, environmental improvement and better health and well being
- Create strong, safe and prosperous communities through the new strategic housing role
- Work across boundaries and at the sub-regional level to develop shared evidence bases and address shared housing issues through joint initiatives and projects.
- Assess and plan for the current and future housing needs and housing markets across the borough.
