Information for New Tenants

PROVISION OF GAS AND ELECTRICITY
It is your responsibility to inform the providers of gas and electricity that you have become the new tenant at the property.  You are responsible for arranging the provision of gas and electricity to your house.  The utility providers are responsible for the meters of the property; the council have no responsibility for the meters.

PROPERTY SECURITY
The Council does not keep any spare keys to your property, you have all copies. Should you lose the keys the Council will charge you for changing the locks to the property.

SMOKE ALARMS
All Council properties are fitted with a smoke alarm for you and your family’s protection.  If your home has solid fuel heating, a carbon monoxide alarm will also be fitted.
It is important that alarms are checked by yourself on a regular basis and batteries changed on the smoke detector on an annual basis.  Carbon monoxide alarms are sealed and do not require the battery to be removed.
Should either alarm become inoperable please contact your local office to arrange for the unit to be replaced.

ASBESTOS INFORMATION - IMPORTANT
As a result of extensive sampling carried out Housing Services the Authority is now in a position to offer the following advice on artex and similar textured coatings occurring in our housing stock.

  • Artexed/textured ceilings in good condition present no risk provided they have painted/sealed finish.
  • Artexed/textured ceilings can be painted or sealed without any cause of concern. If you need to carry out any works to your textured ceiling, we would advise that some older textured ceiling coatings have been found to contain trace amounts of chrysotile (white) asbestos and SHOULD NOT be sanded or machined in any way.
  • It is not possible without analysis to identify possible asbestos content therefore anyone wishing to carry out works other than repainting/resealing must contact the housing hotline on 354600.
  • Not all textured ceilings contain asbestos, however, where damage has occurred this must be reported to your Housing Office as soon as possible to allow for analysis and the necessary remedial works to be carried out safely.

To report any complaint relating to the above contact the Housing Hotline.
