Organise a Tenants & Residents Association

Tenants and Residents Associations are a link between tenants and residents in an area and the local authority.  The groups are also building blocks for friendly neighbourhoods.  Getting involved gives you the opportunity to make friends and learn new skills whilst making a valuable contribution to your community.
The kinds of things that Tenant and Resident Associations can do include:

• Running local activities; e.g. trips, fun days, social evenings and meals.
• Setting up parent and toddler groups.
• Organising activities for young people; e.g. youth clubs, football teams and discos.
• Running training sessions for local people on computer skills, healthy eating, arts and first aid.
• Developing crime prevention and community safety work.
• Organising local events such as litter picks or tidying community gardens.
• Getting involved with how the housing service is provided in the local area.

What support will you receive?

We will formally recognise a Tenants and Residents Association that meet the following conditions:

• Any estate, scheme or settlement without an existing Tenants and Residents Association can form a group, with the catchment area made up of approximately 90% Council built properties.
• The group should be willing to represent the views of all tenants within the area.
• The group will have a committee made up of two thirds tenants, with a tenant elected as Chair or Vice Chair.

Groups that are formally recognised receive ongoing support from the Housing Division, including:

• Annual funding
• Training
• Help with producing publicity materials
• Advice and assistance from the Tenant Participation Officer
