Council Tenants - Disabled Adaptations

You may be finding it more difficult to manage in your present home but would not like to move. You might appreciate some help to enable you to live more easily in your present home. We may be able to assist you by arranging for certain adaptations to be carried out if you, or a member of your household, are elderly or disabled.
Examples of the types of works that may be undertaken include: -

  • Making Access easier to bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen.
  • Making it easier for the elderly/disabled person to use the toilet, bath and/or shower.
  • Making it easier for the elderly/disabled person to prepare and cook food.
  • Making the home safe for the elderly/disabled person.
  • Making access to and from the home easier.

How To Apply For Assistance

If you feel that you need help to carry out adaptations to improve your living arrangements then contact Social Services on Tel 01495 350555. An occupational therapist will visit your home to assess your needs. There are, in broad terms, two categories of works that may be carried out to help you:

Minor Adaptations – These are works that generally cost less than £1000  – such as – grab rails, door intercoms and locks, wooden ramps etc.

Major Adaptations – These are works costing over £1000 – such as – shower installations, access ramps, provision of ground floor toilets, stair-lifts, hoists, bathroom alterations, etc.

Costs for adaptation works on council properties are met by the council.
