Sheltered Housing

There are elderly sheltered complexes or courts throughout Blaenau Gwent. The courts offer residents the security of being in a complex while living independently. Residents can feel assured that help is at hand if they need it in the form of the warden who manages the court at weekdays or the emergency call centre that operates when the warden is off duty (operated by a pull cord system). All courts are also fitted with fire alarms and main door entry systems give residents further peace of mind.

Residents of sheltered accommodation have the opportunity to make new friends within the court. Communal facilities offer regular social activities such as coffee mornings and bingo. Organisations such as Help the Aged and Blaenau Gwent Social Services arrange activities at some of our courts, which in the past have included benefits advice, gentle exercise sessions and healthy eating demonstrations. The mobile library also visits on a regular basis.

It is expected that residents live independently within our courts. The warden service offered at the courts is not a care service and wardens are not nurses. They are there however to act as a ‘good neighbour’ and provide support and advice in the event of emergencies. The warden’s role is to manage the complex, organise social activities and act on the residents’ behalf in matters such as reporting repairs. He or she will visit residents on a daily basis.
