Food Safety Week  2010

This year’s food safety week will take place from the 7th – 13th June 2010 and will focus on the actions people can take at home to  prevent food poisoning from Camplyobacter.

What is Campylobacter?

Campylobacter is a very common form of gastroenteritis. It is more common than Salmonella and is often a cause of travellers diarrhoea.

Campylobacter causes the largest number of food borne illness cases within the UK each year. In 2008 there were about 55,000 reported cases of Campylobacteriosis in the UK. But we are aware that there are many more cases of Campylobacteriosis that go unreported. The realistic number of cases is more likely to be closer to 375,000 each year.

If in the mean time you have any queries about Food Safety or hygiene then contact our Food Safety team on 01495 357813 or Email ehcnet@blaenau-gwent.gov.uk

Blaenau Gwent Trading Standards enforce the Food Safety Act 1990 to ensure all food manufactured or sold in the borough complies with the Act and all other relevant Regulations.

This is achieved by regular inspections of manufacturers, retailers, pubs, restaurants and mobile caterers.  This can involve checking recipes, tracing ingredients from goods in to goods out and examination of labels and packaging to ensure the information is correct.

In licensed premises alcohol is tested for authenticity and to ensure it has not been adulterated.

We also investigate complaints about food, taking samples where necessary for submission to the Public Analyst.
