History

Mining and engineering developed Abertillery into a major commercial centre during the late 19th century and early 20th century, and three and four-storey buildings from that era rise on the steeply sloping hillsides.

Abertillery and District Museum on Market Street contains a fascinating collection of artefacts, documents and photographs dating from the Stone Age through to the Industrial Revolution and beyond. The museum is housed in the former Victorian Metropole Theatre, which is now a state-of-theatre cultural and conference centre offering a wide range of theatrical and musical performances, art exhibitions and workshops, and conference facilities, see www.the-met.co.uk.

Shopping

The Town Centre is home to a charming mix of friendly and welcoming independent and high street retailers, cafes, bars and service businesses. One unique feature is the grand Victorian-style arcade, one of the oldest in Wales, which houses a range of small independent shops and businesses.

Shoppers and visitors can enjoy free all day parking in a number of car parks throughout Abertillery during their visit.

Abertillery Market

A bustling weekly market takes place every Thursday from 9.00am – 2.00pm along Church Street adding to the vibrancy of the Town. The Market offers a good variety of products from fresh local fruit and vegetables, fresh fish & meat to homewares.
