Any person wishing to drive private hire vehicles must first obtain a private hire vehicle driver's licence from the Council. Various checks will be carried out on the applicant, including a criminal record check by the Criminal Record Bureau, and a medical examination. If the checks are satisfactory, the Council will issue a licence and badge which must be worn by the driver at all times whilst driving private hire vehicles.
FAQs
How old do I have to be to drive taxis?
The minimum age is 18 years but there is no upper age limit, however you must have held a full driving licence for a 12 months prior to making the application.
I have a criminal record. Will this mean I can't apply?
No. Anyone can apply, but those with a criminal record or who have penalty points on their driving licence may need to be interviewed by the Licensing Committee, who will decide whether or not a licence should be granted. All applicants will be required to apply for an enhanced criminal records bureau check and a DVLA report. DVLA reports are then required on an annual basis with further Enhanced CRB's required on a three yearly basis.
Do I need to have a medical examination?
Yes, all new applicants will need to provide a medical form, supplied by the Council, completed by their own doctor, or a doctor in the same practice, to determine if they are fit to drive private hire vehicles, before the licence is issued. A further medical will be due when the driver reaches the age of 45, then every 5 years until they are 60, every two years until they are 70 and annually thereafter.
How much does it cost?
The current fee is £40 for the licence and £36 for an Enhanced Criminal Record Bureau check. Your doctor will also make a charge for carrying out the medical.
How long is the licence valid for?
A licence is valid for 1 year unless the application is determined by the Licensing Commitee, when a shorter period may be granted.
