Universal Credit is the new benefit for people of working age.

It replaces: 

  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance

Who is eligible for Universal Credit

From 26th October 2015, single new job-seekers in Blaenau Gwent will claim Universal Credit, instead of the above benefits providing they meet all of the gateway conditions making them eligible. 

If you aren't a single new job-seeker, you should still claim any benefits you're entitled to, and wait for information about when you will move over to Universal Credit.  The UK Government plans for everyone to receive Universal Credit. These will eventually be phased out over the next five years.

What is not included in Universal Credit

Universal Credit won't replace these benefits, which will continue as normal:

  • Contributory Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Contributory Employment and Support Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance / Personal Independence Payments
  • Child Benefit
  • Carer's Allowance
  • Help with Council Tax

Important Update  

Following the recent budget announcement, roll out of Universal Credit Full Service in Blaenau Gwent will now take place on 18th July 2018 and not 18th April 2018.
