Food Business Registration - Starting a New Food Business

To store, prepare, distribute or sell food on or from any premises you will first need to be registered with the Council. . Premises which are required to register include restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops, canteens, market stalls, mobile catering vans and food delivery vans (please note that this is not an exhaustive list).

Some manufacturers handling products of animal origin may also need to be approved by the local authority or the Food Standards Agency. Please refer to the Food Hygiene Approvals and Approved Premises page.

Do I have to pay an application fee?

There is no fee payable for this application.

How long will it take to process my application and will implied consent apply?

Your application will take up to 28 days to process and implied consent will apply. This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from the Council by the end of the 28 day target completion period.

Please note it is an offence to operate a food business without registering with a Council.

After the registration form has been submitted food business operators must notify any significant change in activities to the activities stated above (including closure) to the food authority within 28 days of the change (s) happening.
