Additional Needs

Every child is individual. They all develop and learn at different rates. Some children find learning easy and some find it hard. With the right help all children develop at their own pace. This means that within a classroom, different teaching styles will be needed, taking into account the abilities, strengths, weaknesses and interests of the children. These different approaches to learning will help most children make progress. Some may however need more support.

If you or the school are concerned that your child is not making progress, it is possible that they may have special educational needs. The Welsh Assembly Government has published an SEN (Special Educational Needs) Code of Practice, which sets out a step-by-step approach. The Code of Practice recognises that children learn in different ways and can have different kinds of special educational needs.

In most cases, your child’s school or early years setting will be able to provide for any additional learning needs that your child may have. They do this at what is called the Early Years Action / School Action, or Early Years Action Plus / Schools Action Plus.
