<-- The Story so Far - Future Phases |
|
The
second phase will see the passing loop extended to run between Crosskeys
and Llanhilleth. This will enable a second hourly service to Newport and
make provision for future freight services. Second platforms at Newbridge
and Llanhilleth will also be introduced. Provision
of the service to Newport forms part of the SEWTA Regional Transport Plan
and is subject to further funding applications. The
sites for up to four additional stations have been identified. Abertillery
– a new station at Abertillery would be located at the British Gas site
south of the former Co-op store. The extension of the railway line to
Abertillery will involve relaying the line from Aberbeeg. Ebbw
Vale –
the line will be extended north of Ebbw Vale Parkway to a new terminus
station alongside the old General Offices - near Ebbw Vale town centre.
This is part of the masterplan for the regeneration of this site. The
timing of this proposal is subject to the length of time required to clear
and decontaminate the former works site. Design work is currently
being undertaken. Cwm
– This station would be located on the existing line, at the heart of
the village, adjacent to the Victoria Arms public house. Pye
Corner
– This station would be situated on the existing line adjacent to
Western Valley Road. Cwm
and Pye Corner stations could both be served by the proposed passenger
services to Cardiff and Newport. The operation of passenger services over
the proposed spur to Abertillery would be more complex as it would result
in two possible northern destinations for passenger services.
