Gwent hands over Ebbw Valley Railway - 19th December 2007
The handover took place on the afternoon of Monday, 17 December 2007.
At 0500 hrs the next day the railway was re-opened for operational use and Arriva Trains Wales began route familiarisation training for drivers.
Arrangements for the handover were made at a meeting between senior representatives from Capita Symonds, Amey Construction and Network Rail and officials from Blaenau Gwent Council and the Welsh Assembly Government on Friday, 14 December 2007.
The handover was completed after a final inspection of the line over the following two days.
Important track and safety testing of work on the railway had already been carried out prior to handover. The checks included:
 |
track testing by Network Rail |
 |
independent inspection by HM Railway Inspectorate |
 |
commissioning of the new signalling system. |
The next phase of the project - to identify and rectify any outstanding work – has already begun.
Blaenau Gwent Council together with their project managers Capita Symonds are working with their contractor Amey and Network Rail to close out final issues to enable passenger services to begin in the New Year.
The dates and times of the first passenger services will be announced soon.
