The Welsh Language in Blaenau Gwent

The Welsh Language Standards

We as a Council are fully committed to supporting, encouraging and developing the Welsh Language within the County.  We will endeavour to treat the Welsh and English languages on the basis of equality at all times.

Our current Welsh Language Scheme (2011 – 2014) sets out our commitments under the previous legislation, the Welsh Language Act.

The current legislation, the Welsh Language Measure (Wales) 2011 sets out the Welsh Language Standards and the Council will have a new Welsh Language Scheme in place during 2016 in order to meet the new requirements.

Additionally, the Council produces an Annual Report on progress against the scheme to the Welsh Language Commissioner’s Office.

Welsh Language Promotion Strategy Draft 2017-22

The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 sets out to modernise the legal framework regarding the use of the Welsh language in the delivery of public services.  In September 2015, Blaenau Gwent was issued with a Compliance Notice which set out a requirement to implement 171 of the 176 standards.

One of the statutory requirements of the new Welsh language standards is to create and publish a five year strategy which sets out how we will promote and facilitate the use of Welsh.

We have developed a Draft 5 Year Strategy  which outlines our proposed strategic priorities. We have also included a target to increase the number and percentage of Welsh speakers and learners in Blaenau Gwent to ensure that we play our part in supporting the Welsh Government’s vision of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

Consultation opens 9 January 2017 and closes 3 February 2017. Please complete the consultation survey in the Strategy. If you wish to receive a paper copy of the consultation If you wish to receive a paper copy of the consultation, please contact:
