Blaenau Gwent's Budget Challenge

Our Budget Challenge engagement programme has given people the opportunity to influence the Council’s budget and services.

It has been widely publicised that local councils are facing tough times as the government continues to reduce the amount of money we receive. With less money to spend we have to review all of our services and try to identify millions of pounds in savings. As a result, some of our services will have to change, and we may have to stop providing other services altogether. We created our Budget Challenge public engagement programme to give everyone the opportunity to influence the tough decisions that will need to be made moving forward.

At these Budget Challenge events we gave participants the chance to find out more about how the Council plans to change or stop its services in order to make the necessary cuts to its budget. People were then able to tell us, via a questionnaire, how acceptable they would find each of the changes. We will now use the feedback given to help us decide which proposals are approved and which ones should be rejected before any changes are finalised and our budget is set. 

All of our Budget Challenge events were advertised on our website and social media accounts, in the local press, libraries and in other community buildings throughout the borough.

Latest update: Our most recent Budget Challenge events ended in November 2017. The decisions will be made on the final budget for 2018/19 during a meeting of Council by February 2018. Please check this website for further information In February 2018.
