Census Background

A Census has been undertaken in the United Kingdom every ten years since 1801, with the only exception being in 1941 because of the Second World War.  The main purpose of the Census is to provide a count of all people and households in the country.

The latest Census (Census 2001) was carried out in the United Kingdom on the 29th April 2001.

The Census is important, as it is the most complete source of information about the population that we have (every effort is made to include every person). The same questions are asked at the same time in every part of the country, making it easy for comparison to be made between different parts of the country.

Census 2001 gathered headline information on population, health, housing, employment, education, transport and ethnicity.  The Census, in essence, is a ‘snapshot’ of detailed information for the entire population.

In England and Wales, the Census is planned, developed and undertaken by the Office of National Statistics.  For Scotland and Northern Ireland the responsibility falls to the General Register Office for Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistic and Research Agency respectively.

The Census costs £255 million for the UK as a whole, but the information it provides enables central and local government, and many other statutory bodies, to target billions of pounds of taxpayer’s money to where it is needed.
