History
Brynmawr - ‘Big Hill’ - is the highest town in South Wales situated at 1,200 ft. above sea level. It developed around a network of tramways and turnpike roads, which served the nearby ironworks at Nantyglo.
In 1851 the first Board of Health in England or Wales was established in Brynmawr, demonstrating the town’s progressive nature. During the 1930s a self help scheme called the ‘Brynmawr Experiment’ was masterminded by the Quakers to enable people to work and improve the environment.

Brynmawr boasts a range of specialist, unique independent shops, high street retailers and service businesses in an attractive, friendly environment. BRYNMAWR BUSINESSES GO GREEN!
Brynmawr Business Forum has delived a project for the Town Centre named “Bags 4 Brynmawr” (B4B).
The Bags 4 Brynmawr (B4B) project has been initiated through Brynmawr Business Forum, thanks to a grant from the Naturesave Council, a Brynmawr Town Council donation and local business sponsorship. The project was an idea the Business Forum developed in an attempt to try to create a plastic bag free town in Brynmawr and also help to promote their Town Centre through the branding and design.
With support from the Town Centre Manager, the Business Forum have designed and produced 2,000 cotton shopper bags which are on sale for £1.00 per bag in a number of participating businesses in Brynmawr as listed below:-
- Kutz N Kurlz, Market Square
- Silver Linings, Beaufort Street
- Davies Wallpapers, Beaufort Street
- DIY Centre, Beaufort Street
- Howells Jewellers, Market Square
- Square Card Box, Market Square
- Alan’s Furnishings, Beaufort Street
- The Fruit Shop, Beaufort Street
- The Post Office, Beaufort Street
- Behr & Co Solicitors, Market Square
- Twizzles, Beaufort Street
Contributions and sponsorship from the above businesses coupled with additional sponsorship from Hodge Distribution and Perfections Beauty Salon on Beaufort Street and the funding from Naturesave Trust and Brynamwr Town Council have made the delivery of this project possible.
The Forum hope the use of these sustainable, environmentally friendly cotton bags will replace the wasteful single use plastic bags, while at the same time contributing to the local economy. This scheme will also increase environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices amongst the businesses and shoppers.
Karin Lamb, Town Centre Manager, said “This is an innovative and excellent project which the Business Forum have developed to proactively promote both their businesses and more environmentally friendly practices among shoppers in Brynmawr. The involvement and support from the local business community has been very encouraging and we hope to further increase the numbers of businesses selling the bags to make it a sustainable, long term project. The quality of the bags and design is great and I hope the people of Brymawr will support the local businesses by purchasing one”.
If any business would like further information on how to get involved in this project please contact either the Town Centre Manager on 01495 355565 or Brynmawr Business Forum on 01495 312600.
