A private hire vehicle cannot be hailed in the street and can only be used for pre-arranged bookings. These vehicles do not have a meter and the fare is pre-determined at the time of booking. They can be recognised by white stickers on the doors and a white licence plate displayed on the rear of the vehicle. To run private hire vehicles, a private hire vehicle operator's licence is also required.
