Our dog wardens' patrol the borough and respond to complaints about straying dogs. On average we seize 350 stray dogs per year. We have a policy that all dogs that are not claimed by their owners are re-homed through national re-homing centres. We only put to sleep dogs that are seriously ill or injured or cannot be re-homed due to their age or for behavioural reasons. The Authority uses local kennels to keep the dogs prior to re-homing or re-uniting with their owners.
If you lose a dog:
Call us on (01495) 355054 and we will register your details and the details of the dog. We will cross match these details with those dogs we have already seized. You should also contact local vets or the Police. It is also important to spread the word in your local area so that there are many sets if eyes looking for your lost dog.
If we have your dog in our possession you will have to pay a fee for its release. The current fees are as follows:

All dogs that are taken to the kennels are vaccinated. If your dog receives a vaccination before you collect it a vaccination fee of £12.00 plus VAT is also payable.
You will need to pay the release fee at our offices. We will then give you a release form to take to the kennels to claim your dog.
If you find a dog
Phone us with as much information as possible. We will the either collect the dog if you have it in your possession or attempt to locate and catch the dog should it still be straying.
Unwanted Dogs
Under certain circumstances we will take an unwanted pet from you. We will charge you a fee to cover our kenneling and other costs. Please contact us for more information. This service is only available to residents of Blaenau Gwent. We may ask you to prove that the dog is your and for proof of address.
