School - General Information

Primary Schools are based in the hearts of the communities they serve, providing education in a caring environment;  most provide nursery and pre-school facilities. 

Children also have the opportunity to be taught in Welsh at Ysgol Gymraeg, Brynmawr. 

Comprehensive schools at Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale, Nantyglo and Tredegar offer a wide range of academic and vocational courses in a supportive environment with dedicated staff and excellent facilities.  Opportunities flourish for extra-curricular and cultural activities and strong links with local commerce and industry are maintained through the Blaenau Gwent Education Business Partnership.

The Ebbw Vale Campus of Coleg Gwent offers a vast range of further education opportunities including A Levels.  As well as full-time courses, there are part-time, evening and flexible options to suit older students.

A wide range of daytime and evening classes are also available at local adult education centres – computer courses, crafts, photography, languages and sporting activities.  Open Learning Centres operate in Abertillery, Ebbw Vale, Blaina, Brynmawr and Tredegar.  

What do we do?

• Plan and provide appropriate educational provision for over 12,000 school age pupils.
• Of the Blaenau Gwent pupil population over 2,400 qualify for and receive transport assistance to and from school.
• Further provision for school aged children and young people consists of specialist provision and home tuition addressing education needs, attendance and other specialist needs.
• For students attending further and higher education institutions over 850 student grants are processed each year with over 450 students qualifying for and receiving transport assistance.
• The Department also manages 8 Youth Centres offering a variety of activities for children and young people.
• Other educational opportunities are provided for the Community by the 7 Community Education Centres and the 6 Open Learning Centres that are managed by the Lifelong Learning Department with enrolments currently in excess of 2,000 following 200 Courses.
