What causes street light faults?
Faults and damage to street lights and illumination signs can be caused by; electricity supply interrruptions, adverse weather conditions, component failures, vehicle impact and vandalism.
How often are street lights checked?
Officers carry out night patrols, inspecting all lights every two weeks during both summer and winter months, identifying lights that are out. We also act on any reports recieved from the public. All street lighting faults can be reported to (01495) 311556. Please assist by reporting the identification number on the lighting column or traffic sign. 3500 of the street lights in the borough are monitored by a remote computer within the street lighting office, and are checked daily.
What is the procedure for repairing faulty street lights?
Investigating the cause of faults within 4 working days of them being reported and where possible repairing them on the first visit. The majority are repaired on the first visit, others may require more major repairs or involve electricity supply faults.

How long should i wait before the light is repaired?
Routine repairs should be completed 4 working days after recieving the report.
The light has been out for weeks - why can it not be repaired?
The faults may not be in the lighting column. The light might not work because of faults in underground / overfeed electricity supply cables. These need to be repaired by the regional electricity company and it may be difficult for them to program the work into their repair schedules due to difficulty in exposing the cables. Unfortunately these type of repairs result in longer delays.
You said urgent attention would be given, as the fault was dangerous - but why it is still not working properly?
The first priority is to make the light safe. Full repairs are then carried out at a later date.
You keep repairing the light but it is still not working properly. Why?
The lighting column has many internal working parts. Sometimes faults arise when different parts fail, and sometimes several faults develop at the same time. When this happens, more than one visit may be required to make the repairs and rectify the faults. We find that many people believe the light is not working solely because the lamp is broken. Often this is not the case.
