Birth - Registering
If baby was born in Blaenau GwentOnly the parents of the baby may attend to register.
In exceptional circumstances, such as the death of the mother, or an abandoned child, another person may be able to register the baby. If you are not one of the baby’s parents please ring the appropriate office for advice.
If your baby was born in Abertillery, Brynmawr, Blaina, Nantyglo, Llanhilleth, or Swffrydd, please ring the Abertillery, Brynmawr or Blaina offices for help and advice on what to bring and who needs to attend to register the baby
If your baby was born in Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Rassau, Beaufort, or Cwm please ring the Tredegar office for help and advice on what to bring and who needs to attend to register the baby.
When you register you will be issued with one free short birth certificate for the baby. Any additional certificate will cost £3.50. You can pay by cash or cheque but at present, NOT debit or credit card.
You will also be given a Form FP58 showing the baby’s National Health Number allowing you to register the baby with your doctor
If your baby was born elsewhere
Each birth must be entered into the register in the district (town or area) in which it happened.
You can attend any register office in Blaenau Gwent and give a Declaration of Birth. The details will then be forwarded onto the office in the district where the baby was born.
Any certificates will be issued by the appropriate office after the birth has been entered into their register. You will not be given any certificates by the registrar taking the details for the Declaration of Birth form.
The office that enters the birth into their register will send you one free short certificate. Each additional certificate costs £3.50 and because the birth details are being sent in the post to another office you can only pay by cheque or postal order
If you need the certificates urgently, you will need to go to the office in the town where the baby was born to register the birth there.
Re-Registering a birth
If you wish to re-register your baby’s birth to add father’s details or because you have since married the baby’s father, please call a main register office in Blaenau Gwent for help and advice on 01495 216082 (Abertillery) 01495 722769 (Tredegar).
