Pupils in Blaenau Gwent have achieved the county borough’s best ever GCSE results.
The number of students at the six comprehensive schools to have achieved at least one of the top grades has gone up to 76.6% - an increase of 3.9% on 2009.
This beats the Wales national average of 66.4%. The overall increase is the numbers achieving this is four times that across Wales as a whole.
The overall number of A* to C grades in Blaenau Gwent has now reached at 59%. This builds on the successes of last year – and there has been a 7% increase over the last three years.
For the first time the number of pupils achieving 5 or more A* to C grades (the Level 2 Threshold) has broken the 50% barrier.
In addition, the number of pupils achieving 5 or more A* to G grades have also reached an all time high of 83.8% this year.
Coun Steve Bard, Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Education, said:
“I am very proud that the results for pupils in Blaenau Gwent continue to improve. Last year’s record results have been surpassed.
“Well done to pupils, teachers and the schools for their great achievements. I would also like to pay tribute to the invaluable support given by parents and families”.
