Grants of up to £1,000 are available from Blaenau Gwent Council for local people who want to develop sport and physical activities in their communities.
The Sports Council for Wales’s Community Chest scheme offers grant aid to local clubs, organisations or individuals who are looking to create new or improved sporting facilities.
The aims of the scheme are to encourage more people to become physically active more often and to develop new sporting leaders, coaches and officials.
Blaenau Gwent Council runs the scheme local and distributes the Community Chest grants.
Cllr Jason Owen, Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for local individuals, clubs and organisations to finance activities which may otherwise not be possible.
“The Community Chest scheme has been a huge success in Blaenau Gwent and across South Wales. We hope it continues this success and want to hear from people who have bright ideas for projects that will get more people to get active and stay active."
Tredegar Ladies Netball Club is one local club that has already benefited from the scheme. It was awarded £1,000 to buy training and playing equipment and pay for coaching education.
Team captain and coach co-ordinator, Hayley James said:
“The money helped the club to develop our coaches in order to provide the best possible training sessions and assist player development. It is also being used to fund training for our up and coming coaches.”
Organisations can apply for Community Chest grants as long as they have a bank or building society account in the name of the organisation. Clubs can apply for two awards in a financial year. One of the awards must be for a physical activity not usually offered by the applicant, for example, walking, cycling activities from the club base or keep fit classes in the clubhouse.
The idea is to provide local people with as many diverse sporting opportunities as possible.
