Following the publication of Statutory Notices proposing the closure of the school from the 31st August 2009, a number of formal objections were received by the Authority. These have been sent to the Welsh Assembly Government, together with the Authority's observations on the objections and the decision on the proposal will now be made by Welsh Assembly Ministers. The Authority do not feel that we will be able to give interested parties sufficient notice of closure of the school (if approved) from this September. If the proposal is approved, we could request a revised implementation date from the beginning of the spring or summer terms, 2010. However, at their meeting held on the 22nd April 2009, the Authority’s Executive Committee decided that if the proposal is approved by Ministers, it would be in the best interests of staff and pupils to request a revised implementation date of the 1st September 2010. A revision to the implementation date would need to be agreed by Welsh Assembly Government, but we are not now proposing the closure of the school until the end of the next academic year, that is, on the 31st August, 2010. We will provide you with further information when we have a Ministerial decision which we hope will be forthcoming before the end of this school year.

Proposal to Refurbish, Remodel and Extend Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw
-
The Pan-Gwent authorities (ie Torfaen County Borough Council, Monmouthshire County Council, Newport City Council and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council) have been working collaboratively to provide sufficient places for all children and young people requiring a Welsh medium secondary education. At present pupils from the four authorities attend Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw and this proposal provides an opportunity to both expand, remodel and refurbish the school to meet the Welsh Assembly Government target with regard to “fit for purpose”.
